Manuel Obregón, uno de los pianistas costarricenses más reconocidos, está listo para continuar en el 2008 el más ambicioso proyecto musical de su carrera: una orquesta con músicos de todo el continente y con la cual recorrerá desde el Mississipi hasta la Cuenca de la Plata. Esto de formar orquestas no es algo nuevo para él. Ya en el 2002 había estrenado la “Orquesta de la Papaya”, un proyecto musical que reúne a músicos de la región centroamericana, la cual tuvo una excelente acogida en escenarios de distintas latitudes. Sin embargo, la magnitud del proyecto y la cantidad de músicos es ahora mucho mayor, por lo que los detalles que cuidar son también muchísimos. La cifra de 180 audiciones en todos los países para reclutar a su tripulación habla por sí misma. El estreno mundial de la Orquesta Río Infinito se realizó en mayo de este año, en Paraguay, durante la celebración de los 122 años del compositor Agustín Barrrios “Mangoré”, a teatro lleno y con el público aplaudiendo en pie. El primer concierto por la Cuenca del Río Paraguay se realizó recientemente, y tuvo una muy buena acogida. La gira continuará, hasta que las principales cuencas del continente estén todas llenas de música. Cada una representa a una región distinta del continente: la Papaya es Centroamérica; la de las Misiones investiga la tradición de la música de las misiones jesuitas en México, Guatemala, Argentina, Bolivia, Brasil, Paraguay y Uruguay. Luego se unieron los ritmos brasileños, chilenos, colombianos y uruguayos y formamos la Orquesta América Contemporánea; y por último incorporamos a músicos de Chile y Perú, así como de Canadá y Estados Unidos, con lo cual completamos la Orquesta del Río Infinito. ¿Cómo descubriste el tema de las misiones jesuitas y su influencia musical en el continente? Todo empezó hace unos años, cuando fui invitado a Paraguay a raíz de un homenaje que se le hacía al compositor Agustín Barrios “Mangoré. A mí siempre me había encantado su música y mi interés fue tal que incluso hice un disco con composiciones para piano. Estando allá, escuché a los muchachos del pueblo de San Juan Bautista de las Misiones tocar una música bastante compleja. Ellos me explicaron que esa era de la música que les habían legado los jesuitas. A partir de ahí empecé a investigar la manera en que los jesuitas incorporaron la música del barroco y el renacimiento europeo y la mezclaron con otros ritmos e instrumentos autóctonos, dando como resultado sonidos muy interesantes. Estoy convencido de que en las Américas existe una música que ha viajado con los pueblos originarios por miles de años, y que ella continúa viva en las formas musicales actuales. Resulta interesante que un músico como vos, cuya formación se dio principalmente en España, se haya interesado en rescatar ritmos autóctonos del país y el continente en general. ¿De dónde surge ese interés? Cuando yo vivía en España veía que los músicos de distintas partes del mundo conocían su folclor y lo ejecutaban, mientras que yo con costos me sabía La Guaria Morada. Entonces cuando volví a Costa Rica luego de vivir diez años allá, quise empezar a moverme por ese lado. Después todo se fue dando por casualidades, ya luego me interesó conformar la Orquesta de la Papaya, Malpaís, y así sucesivamente me fui topando a gente que se interesó en el proyecto de hermanar a cada vez más regiones a través de la música. Cómo percibís ese fenómeno que se ha dado para que otras personas se interesen en los ritmos autóctonos. Durante los 90 Costa Rica vivió una época en que la producción nacional en torno a nuestro folclor fue muy pobre. Incluso el interés de los medios de comunicación por los músicos nacionales es algo reciente. Yo siento que lo que ha venido pasando es que se ha venido generando un fenómeno de mucho entusiasmo por conocer lo nuestro, por sentirnos parte de algo, y no hablo solo de Costa Rica sino de América Latina en general, por ejemplo vemos cómo en Chile los jóvenes bailan la Cueca, y en Argentina el Tango. A través de nuestra música nos hemos dado cuenta de que compartimos mucho más que tradiciones, comidas o desastres naturales, y eso a la gente le crea mucha emoción. Personalmente, ¿qué ha representado esta Orquesta? Una locura. Ha representado una dosis enorme trabajo y de desapego a otros proyectos como Malpaís, he tenido que dejar de hacer conciertos solo, he dedicado menos tiempo a mi vida personal. Pero para mí también representa una búsqueda de mis raíces, así que es una inversión que vale la pena. ¿Te han dicho que estás loco? Sí…. Lo que pasa es que la gente no lo entiende hasta que ven el resultado. Y ya con los primeros conciertos ya la gente ha empezado a creer. Igual no estamos inventando nada, solamente estamos rescatando la memoria de muchas regiones. Pero ya todo esto ha existido desde hace muchísimo tiempo.
